Although ArcSDE is an old concept (that is not used anymore by Esri), it’s the foundation of today’s Esri enterprise geodatabase —Can I say it is the technology behind enterprise geodatabases? (please correct me if not) —.
For those, like me, who want to explore the topic of enterprise geodatabases but are looking for more contextual and ‘under the hood’ information, the below resources might help:
- Understanding ArcSDE (an Esri pdf).
- Why use ArcSDE? (a 2015 Esri Community post)
- Is ArcSDE dead? Part I & Is ArcSDE dead? Part II (two 2015 Esri Australia technical articles).
- Can ArcGIS Server be called ArcSDE? (a 2013 GISSE post).
- ArcSDE (GeoServer docs).
- (…) The Spatial Database Engine (SDE) file… (source) (ArcMap docs).
- The architecture of a geodatabase (ArcGIS Help 10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2).
- Enterprise geodatabase 101 (an old Esri ArcUser article).
I also found this below comment very relevant for those who want to dive into the topic of ArcSDE and geodatabase administration:
Part of the issue is a thorough understanding of how databases work. I realize it’s hard to step in to some other admin’s shoes, but Esri can’t provide all the pieces in the learning curve. I strongly recommend you find a book or class in SQL-Server administration. (Source).
You will find other resources about ArcGIS geodatabase on this MGN page.
