Last week, I started learning FME. There are different reasons for using FME, but as an ETL, the primary purpose might be to Extract, Transform, and Load, or as this article mentions: “FME is primarily a tool for moving data, integrating systems, and preparing data for use in other systems.” However, an FME license is paid, so how do you start learning FME without having a license?
The FME Form Basic course
A convenient way to start with FME and get a good overview of its usefulness is following the FME Form Basic course. FME Form (formerly FME Desktop) is the authoring environment that enables you to create data integration workflows using a visual interface; no coding is required (source).
You might come across this resource when you initially search for the FME Basic course. This is the recorded course, but not the step-by-step course with exercises to practice. The course I followed and recommend is this one. To access it, you must register on the Safe Sofware website. The excellent thing is that if you don’t have an FME Form license, you can request a Virtual Machine (VM) to do the exercises. The website link to request the VM can be found on this other FME Academy course.
To summarize:
- The FME Form Basic course URL: https://academy.safe.com/path/fme-form-basic
- The course URL in which you will find the link to request VM access within Strigo.io: https://academy.safe.com/welcome-to-the-fme-academy
A bit more info on FME
If you are a geospatial professional, you might also want to know that:
FME supports 450+ formats and is recognized as the integration platform with the best support for spatial data” (Source).
In this MGN page, I plan to keep different FME platform resources I find.
PS: Safe Software offers free live training during working Pacific hours a few times during the year. You can check the upcoming courses. The FME Form Basic course is one of those given.
